The New Media Consortium put out their Horizon Report, focused on the emerging interactions of museums and technology in the coming years. I have yet to read it, but a friend pointed out the focus on tablet computing in the space, and making content available in a digital and virtual space.
I have yet to visit a museum where patrons had access to tablets as they perused the collection. At the MFA in Boston each docent had a tablet computer that they held close, but there was no docent/patron interaction involving the digital space. Also, the museum seemed to have their entire collection on the Web, which is impressive. Search terms were artist and period. What about other search terms? What about crowdsourcing?
